2021 Utah Donut Championship Winner

Another year, another donut champion is crowned in Utah! We just wrapped up our 2021 Utah Donut Championship Bracket, which always turns into a big donut lovefest more than a heated competition. I always love to see who claims the people’s choice prize in the donut world!

We started our donut bracket with the top 16 deserving shops in the state of Utah. See below for the list and links to their social accounts (I recommend all donut fans in the area follow them for drool-worthy pics and shop updates).

What began as the Sweet 16, became the Appetizing 8, next the Flavorsome 4, then it was the Tasty 2, and finally the Donut Champion. 2021 saw the rise of dark horse candidate, Donut Star of Draper, nearly take down every shop to the final. However, Chubby Baker continued her dominance and emerged the top donut shop in Utah. See the final bracket to see some close head to head battles!

Chubby Baker has taken donut fans by storm since beginning her pick-up shop in late summer 2020. Her donuts are some of my favorite so it was not a shock to see her take the gold. The passion fruit donut may be my favorite donut overall right now – it’s that good. Besides amazing flavors, everything is anchored by one of the best raised doughs I’ve had. The dough has a great shell, is soft and spongy on the inside, and has outstanding flavor.

What’s in store for 2022?

It was apparent that a lot of the donut fans want an expanded bracket to include more of their favorite shops. You are heard! 2022 will feature the Top 32. If the NCAA football can expand their playoff, then donuts can too. Look at the list below of other shops in Utah that will be in the running.

How were the shops selected?

There were three main criteria that we used to select the top 16. First, I have tasted all the shops and give my own recommendation for the top donuts (ranked from first to last). I base my recommendation based on dough, topping quality and selection, and overall experience with the shop. Second, I consult with area donut fans based on their experience and ratings. Finally, I let the people speak. I ask dessert fans who should be included and also look at the reviews and opinions on the different social channels. This allows shops that have relatively small social followings to still be top contenders for the best donuts.

We can’t wait to get the voting again because it was that fun! I loved all the support shown to the various donut shops in Utah. If you want to find the best then this is a good list to start from!
