I recently polled hundreds of donut enthusiasts to see what they thought about donut etiquette topics. It was very interesting to see the results. It seems that the majority of people are nice and willing to take what they get… unlike me because I want what I want! Give me the best donut!

The following are the poll results and some commentary from me, your donut expert.
Question #1 Donut case etiquette
Can you put the donut back once you touched it in a self-serve display case (even when using a paper sheet)?
Choices:
- 57% – You touch, you buy.
- 43% – Ok if using the paper.
Heck no! I don’t want a donut handled by anyone. If you touch then you buy!
Question #2 Donut box etiquette
Who’s job is it to throw the box away?
Choices:
- 13% – Bringer of donuts
- 87% – Taker of last donut
If you leave an empty box when taking the last donut, then you need to learn your manners! This responsibility should never fall on the person that brought the donuts.
Question #3 Donut line etiquette
Standing in line, if the person in front of you chooses the last donut you REALLY wanted – ok to voice the disappointment or just keep your mouth shut?
Choices:
- 19% – Say something.
- 81% – Keep quiet.
I will say something… even if I act like I’m kidding. I don’t get the donut but they may actually like that donut more knowing that is was in high demand.
Question #4 Donut sharing etiquette
In unfamiliar company, take the whole donut or ok to cut off a slice for a taste?
Choices:
- 56% – Take the whole donut.
- 44% – Take a slice is ok.
I think it is totally fine to slice donuts in any type of company. I love testing multiple flavors and the only way to do it is not fill up on only one donut. I know this can be a heated debate in some families!
Question #5 Donut choice etiquette
Ok to take any donut in a box, even if it is the biggest, best, or most delicious?
Choices:
- 92% – Yes, take it.
- 8% – No, let someone else enjoy it.
Take the donut you want! If donuts are offered then you shouldn’t have reservations on the choice. Make your day!
Question #6 Donut suggestions etiquette
Is it ok to “suggest” flavors that were missed that you would want from future donut runs?
Choices:
- 60% – Yes, tell them what you want.
- 40% – Be happy what you get.
I think it is totally fair to suggest certain types of donuts. You don’t need to be jerk and make them feel bad for bringing unfavorable donut flavors, but you can suggest donut flavors that would be great next time.
Question #7 Picking up donuts etiquette
When you pick up donuts, do you pick only flavors you like or pick a variety to appeal to more people?
Choices:
- 28% – Pick your favorite flavors.
- 72% – Bring a variety.
I see no issue bringing the donuts that you like. I am often left with donuts at the end of the day and I would rather have the donuts I want to eat then a variety of donuts nobody wants. I also like to choose my favorites so I can tell my coworkers why I like those specific flavors.
