My Favorite Philly Cheesesteaks in Utah
Anyone a Philly cheesesteak fan? Yeah, me too. I’ve been to Philadelphia but I’m not here to dis the sandwich scene ‑ no use trying to compare what we have in Utah to the originals in PA. I’ve compiled a list of my favorite Philly cheesesteaks in Utah based on overall quality and taste (meat, bread, cheese, sauce). I’m noting a few spots that people claim should be on the list but I haven’t yet tried… others I’ve left off the list because I didn’t care for them. Let me know if I should add any to my list because I can update these guides when I find new delicious Phillies!
Haven’t tried but I plan to visit:
- Murphy’s Cafe 126
- Steak Express (Provo)
- The Italian Place
- East Coast Subs (Murray)
- Pepitos (Ogden)
Vito’s
I always hit up Vito’s when I’m in Bountiful around 11‑2 on weekdays (super limited hours and he sells out early some days!). It’s our favorite! Vito is a one man band and it’s awesome to witness. The meat and veggies have great flavor and always taste fresh. I drench my sandwich in Vito’s sauce (jalapeño mayo)… 2 issues. He serves it open and it’s hard to not eat without a fork and knife. The bread has been hit and miss, but my bread the last few times as been great! I load mine with mushrooms with the American Swiss he uses. Some other favorites include the Alfredo and chicken Philly. Also, I’m really sad that he only serves chips and not fries… BUT I respect that his sole focus is the sandwich and it shows in the execution.
Fat Boy Phillies
(Tied 1) [update: the meat was probably the best in state I’ve had on a Philly!] We were blown away with our Phillies from Fat Boy Phillies. Super delicious. They offered a lot of different cheese options (variety appeals to us) and had a delicious sauce to liven up the sandwich. The meat had great taste and wasn’t tough. I think the only thing we weren’t impressed with was the bread. It was good but not noteworthy. Another plus for this shop is the option to order French fries 🙌🏼.
Moochie’s Meatballs
An SLC classic and my first Philly love in Utah. They also have several cheese options but I like the original American cheese (mushrooms added). The Moochies sauce helps put this place high on my list. We buy the sauce by the bottle to pour it on other food at home 👊. We also love the battered fries (I dip them in half Moochies jalepeno and half fry sauce). Biggest drawback has been lower quality experiences at locations that aren’t the OG downtown locations.
Downtown Philly Cheesesteaks
I feel like DP Cheesesteaks has a more refined approach to cheesesteaks. That can be a plus or minus for Philly fans. I visit DP for the flavor options (I like the garlic or bleu cheese Phillies but they have several options). Their jalapeño sauce is good but never brings out enough flavor to make a huge contribution. Downside to DP is they only sell chips and their soda options aren’t my jam.
Grinders 13
I like Grinders. A straightforward Philly. A great option when in the area and their other sandwiches are top notch. Only think I hoped for was a higher meat to bread ratio… and sauce options to spice it up!

The Philidelphian
Sandy has a great Philly spot with the Philadelphian! It feels like you’ve interrupted a boys club when walking in but the food is 👌. I always really like my sandwich but I never leave thinking that’s the best Philly. It’s got all the workings for greatness but some finer points are lacking. I get it to go because I don’t like smelling like meat and cheese the rest of the day :).
Maxwell’s, SLC
I’ve had good and I’ve had bad from Maxwell’s. It’s the inconsistency that puts this Philly cheesesteak down the list. The meat has been tougher and chewier than I want on my Phillies ‑ probably a result of them having such a broad menu to serve.
